UNEXPECTED CRITICISM: Robbie Williams accused the royal family of being “stingy” after revealing how little they paid him to perform at King Charles’ coronation.

Robbie Williams, the iconic British pop star,

recently shared why he chose to skip a monumental opportunity to perform at King Charles III’s coronation in May 2023.

During his Jan. 13 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Williams opened up about the decision,

shedding light on the personal and professional factors behind it.

Host Andy Cohen delved into the topic, questioning Williams about turning down the royal event despite his long-standing connections to the royal family.

Williams, 50, explained candidly, “Yeah, but there was a reason.

I was working. I got something I couldn’t turn down because of money.” Cohen, 56, added humorously, “And contracts,” though neither elaborated on the specific project that kept Williams away from the historic occasion.

A Longstanding Connection with Royalty

Williams’ ties to the British royal family are well-documented. In 2011, he met Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, aboard a yacht in the Caribbean, as reported by Hello Magazine. This encounter marked the beginning of a connection that extended to the next generation. In 2018, his daughter, Theodore, played a special role as a flower girl at Princess Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank. The event underscored the familial bond between Williams and the royals.

Despite this close association, Williams was one of several major artists who declined to perform at King Charles’ coronation. According to Rolling Stone, global superstars such as Adele, Elton John, the Spice Girls, and Harry Styles also turned down invitations to participate in the royal celebration. While the reasons varied, Williams’ explanation reflects the realities of balancing high-profile commitments in the entertainment industry.

A Star-Studded Coronation Concert

Although Williams and other notable names were absent, the coronation event featured a dazzling lineup of performers. Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, who serves as an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, took center stage, delivering unforgettable renditions of their hit songs. Perry wowed the audience with performances of “Roar” and “Firework.”

The celebration also included performances by Andrea Bocelli, Take That, Sir Bryn Terfel, Freya Ridings, and Alexis Ffrench. The Coronation Concert, held at Windsor Castle, celebrated a new chapter in British history. As described by the BBC, the event embodied themes of love, respect, and optimism, uniting communities from across the Commonwealth and beyond.

Promoting a Personal Project

Williams’ decision to prioritize other commitments during the coronation aligns with his ongoing career endeavors. He appeared on Watch What Happens Live to promote his biographical film, Better Man. The movie chronicles his meteoric rise to fame, the challenges of stardom, and his ultimate resurgence.

Described as a deeply personal project, Better Man provides an intimate glimpse into Williams’ life, including his time with the iconic boy band Take That and his subsequent success as a solo artist. With its mix of humor, candor, and drama, the film captures Williams’ unique perspective on fame and its complexities. Following a limited release, Better Man is set to premiere nationwide on Jan. 17, offering fans a fresh look at the life of one of Britain’s most enduring entertainers.

A Balancing Act

For Williams, the decision to decline performing at the coronation underscores the delicate balance entertainers must strike between personal values and professional commitments. While his connection to the royal family is significant, the demands of his career ultimately took precedence. As he continues to captivate audiences with his music and storytelling, Williams remains a figure who values authenticity and pragmatism in equal measure.

The coronation may have proceeded without him, but Robbie Williams’ influence and legacy as an entertainer remain as strong as ever.
