Richard Hammond has been totally “ostracized” at home after his daughter “did this” during his tough divorce battle: “They’re nothing but backstabbers…”

Izzy Hammond, daughter of former Top Gear star Richard Hammond,

has opened up about growing up with a father who became infamous for his daredevil stunts and life-threatening car crashes.

The 24-year-old, who is now a content creator, appeared on Ben Fowler’s Road To Success podcast and reflected on her father’s risk-taking behavior,

calling him an “idiot” and admitting he has “no fear.”

Richard Hammond, now 55, made headlines throughout his career for pushing the boundaries of what could be done on television.

As a key figure on Top Gear and later on The Grand Tour, Hammond became renowned for his high-octane,

sometimes dangerous stunts, often involving high-speed driving, racing, and risky maneuvers. It was during one of these stunts in 2006 that he experienced a near-fatal crash, which left him in a coma for several weeks as he battled a serious brain injury.

While Richard’s fearless approach to television has earned him praise and a massive fan following, his daughter Izzy’s candid remarks shed light on the less glamorous side of being part of a family that constantly lived in the shadow of danger.

A Childhood with a Daredevil Father

Izzy, speaking on the podcast just days before her parents announced their split after 28 years together, offered an insight into her childhood. Growing up with a father who was often away filming, Izzy recalls how her memories of him are tied to rare, memorable moments, rather than the everyday presence many children take for granted.

“He wasn’t there a lot and that’s all I really knew growing up,” she said, reflecting on her father’s busy filming schedule. “I always think it must be frustrating for my mum because probably some of my happiest memories are ironically with my dad because he wasn’t there that much.”

Though Izzy emphasized that her childhood wasn’t difficult, she admitted that her parents had to navigate the challenges of Richard’s dangerous job. “I’m not saying I had some awful childhood, I really didn’t at all,” she clarified. “I think my parents were really good at navigating because they had no idea what was going to happen.”

Izzy also acknowledged that, due to her father’s constant filming, she was kept somewhat in the dark about the more dangerous aspects of his job. “They were very good at sort of drip feeding information so we’d know a bit what he was doing but not enough to worry us,” she said, adding that sometimes, the stunts he was involved in were so outrageous they shouldn’t have been shared with her at all.

A Dangerous Career: The 2006 Crash

Of course, Izzy was well aware of her father’s most infamous accident—the horrific crash he endured in 2006 while filming for Top Gear. During a high-speed test of a jet-powered car, Richard lost control, resulting in a crash that left him fighting for his life. His injuries were so severe that he spent several weeks in a coma. Richard has since revealed that the experience led to lasting memory issues, a consequence of the brain injury he suffered.

Reflecting on the crash, Izzy admitted that it was difficult to witness the aftermath of such a traumatic event. “I knew the crash happened,” she said, “but I didn’t realize the full extent of it until I saw how much it affected him afterward. He still has memory issues today as a result.”

The crash had a profound impact not only on Richard but on his entire family. His wife, Mindy, who was by his side throughout his recovery, has since spoken about how her “screaming” helped rouse him from the coma. The experience was life-changing, and Richard himself has spoken in interviews about how the event shaped his life, including his memories of dreaming about walking in the Lake District while under the influence of morphine during his recovery.

Izzy’s Take on Richard’s Fearlessness

Izzy’s recollections highlight just how much her father’s career has defined her own life experiences. Despite the fearlessness and daring behavior that Richard is known for, Izzy’s assessment of him is blunt. When asked by Ben Fowler whether she would describe her father as a “daredevil” or an “idiot,” she immediately responded with “idiot.”

She elaborated on this by describing how her father has a unique characteristic that sets him apart from most people: a complete lack of fear. “He has that thing that racing drivers have where they just don’t have the fear,” she explained. “Everyone has that line where it’s like ‘okay I know where the line is,’ he just doesn’t have that. He really genuinely would just go and go and go.”

Izzy’s words underline the risks that Richard has taken throughout his career, and although she refers to him as an “idiot,” it’s clear that her feelings toward him are filled with both concern and admiration.

The Split and Life After the Cameras

The interview with Izzy comes just days before the news of her parents’ separation broke. After 28 years together, Richard and Mindy announced their split, adding another chapter to the often tumultuous life Richard has led in the public eye.

Despite the challenges, Izzy’s reflections on her father paint a picture of a man driven by passion, fearlessness, and a desire to entertain—traits that have undoubtedly shaped both his career and his family’s life.
