Pete Davidson is no stranger to public scrutiny, but the comedian recently opened up
about why he believes his high-profile relationships have received more attention than those of other celebrities.
Reflecting on the media frenzy surrounding his romantic life, Davidson admitted that the intense focus has been both “humiliating” and “upsetting” over the years.
Davidson Calls Out Double Standard in Hollywood Dating
While discussing his dating history, Davidson pointed out that Hollywood is full of stars in high-profile relationships, yet his love life has been dissected far more than others.
“Everyone is dating everyone and it’s Hollywood,” he told Page Six, adding that other actors like Paul Mescal, Timothée Chalamet,
and Barry Keoghan also date well-known figures but don’t face the same level of scrutiny.
“But because I’m ugly, they wrote about me,” Davidson joked, before acknowledging the harsh reality of how the public and media have treated him. “I was harassed for like five years, and it made my life a living hell.”
Media Obsession Overshadowed His Career
Davidson’s rise to fame began with Saturday Night Live (SNL), where he became one of the youngest cast members in the show’s history. However, he feels that his work in comedy has been overshadowed by constant speculation about his relationships.
“I was one of the youngest-ever cast members on SNL, and all that got pushed to the side because of who I was dating,” he explained.
Despite the overwhelming attention on his personal life, Davidson maintains that he has nothing but respect for his exes, describing them as “pretty amazing women.” He also emphasized that his breakups have all been amicable, with no bad blood between him and his former partners.
A Whirlwind Romance With Ariana Grande Brought Him Into the Spotlight
Davidson’s romantic history became a major topic of conversation in 2018 when he began dating pop superstar Ariana Grande. Their relationship was a whirlwind, with the couple getting engaged just weeks after they started dating. However, their romance ended just as quickly, with Grande calling off the engagement later that year.
Though their split was highly publicized, Davidson moved on to date several other high-profile women, including Kate Beckinsale, Margaret Qualley, and Kaia Gerber.
High-Profile Relationships With Kim Kardashian and Other A-Listers
One of Davidson’s most publicized relationships came in 2021 when he started dating Kim Kardashian. The two first met when Kardashian hosted SNL, and their chemistry quickly became apparent. Their relationship lasted for nine months before they ultimately went their separate ways in August 2022.
Following his split from Kardashian, Davidson briefly dated model Emily Ratajkowski before entering a relationship with his Bodies Bodies Bodies co-star, Chase Sui Wonders, in 2023. More recently, he was linked to Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline, but their relationship ended in July 2024 after nearly a year together.
Why Pete Davidson Struggles With the Public’s Obsession Over His Dating Life
Despite dating some of the most famous women in the world, Davidson still struggles to understand why his relationships attract so much attention.
In a 2023 interview on the Real Ones podcast, he expressed frustration over the way people talk about his dating life.
“I’m in my 20s, and I’ve dated people. And for some reason, that’s very crazy and interesting to people. I don’t think it’s interesting,” he said.
Davidson went on to clarify that while his dating history may seem extensive to some, it’s actually quite normal.
“I’ve been in show business for, like, half my life almost—for 14 or 15 years—and on a national TV show. In 12 years, I’ve dated 10 people,” he pointed out. “I don’t think that’s that crazy, but to some people, that’s very interesting. That became all anyone would talk about.”
Focusing on His Career and Personal Growth
Although Davidson has been a target of gossip for years, he hopes to shift the focus back to his work rather than his personal life.
“Suddenly, you’re in this zeitgeist, and that has nothing to do with the work. And that’s a really s****y feeling. I became more known before the work was there, but I was always working,” he explained.
For now, Davidson is taking a break from dating and focusing on himself.
“Over the last six months, I’m not dating. I’m starting to turn my life around,” he told Page Six.
Despite the constant scrutiny, Davidson remains committed to his craft and hopes that, in time, his career will be what defines him—not just his relationships.
