Former television presenter Melanie Sykes has publicly criticized the TV industry and her former co-host, Gino D’Acampo,
as misconduct allegations against the celebrity chef continue to surface.
She condemned the industry for fostering an environment that enables inappropriate behavior, calling for major reforms to eliminate toxic workplace culture.
Melanie Sykes Speaks Out Against Gino D’Acampo and Industry Misconduct
Melanie Sykes, 55, has become one of the most outspoken critics of the television industry,
recently sharing her experiences and frustrations regarding what she describes as a toxic work environment.
She specifically addressed the growing controversy surrounding Gino D’Acampo, her former co-host on Let’s Do Lunch with Gino and Mel, which aired from 2011 to 2014.
During a discussion on her YouTube channel, Melanie did not hold back, stating:
“Celebrity Juice was an abomination. The industry creates monsters.”
She went on to recall a past conversation with D’Acampo, revealing that he once bragged about his direct access to industry executives.
“I remember once when Gino told me he could go up to the powers that be, knock on the door, and go in; he didn’t need a meeting. He was quite pleased with himself that he could do that.”
Melanie’s statements reflect her belief that individuals in the entertainment industry are often given unchecked power, leading to the kind of behavior that is now coming under scrutiny.
Gino D’Acampo Faces Serious Allegations
The controversy surrounding Gino D’Acampo intensified following an ITV News investigation that revealed multiple allegations of “distressing” and “sexually inappropriate” behavior over the past 12 years. Several individuals have come forward, describing their experiences as “horrendous” and “unacceptable.”
Despite these claims, the 48-year-old chef has vehemently denied all allegations, with his legal team asserting that he does not recall or accept the accusations. In response to one specific claim, a spokesperson for D’Acampo said:
“This allegation from almost 15 years ago has never, until now via a media request for comment, been raised or put to Mr. D’Acampo. He does not recall it, nor accept that this happened. Mr. D’Acampo is horrified to be accused of ‘power play’ and an ‘aggressive act’. He emphatically and unequivocally denies these allegations.”
Despite his denials, the accusations have raised concerns about the broader culture within the television industry, with critics arguing that workplace misconduct has been ignored or tolerated for too long.
Melanie Sykes Calls for Industry-Wide Change
Melanie Sykes has long been vocal about her negative experiences in television, previously revealing that she left the industry after working with MasterChef host Gregg Wallace. She has criticized TV executives for failing to hold individuals accountable and has now called for a complete overhaul of the system.
“I feel like I was in a war zone in that industry—24 years of battling through an industry that didn’t feel right to me anyway. If you’re spending all your time cleaning up people’s s**, clean the house, clean out the house and start again, that’s all I’m saying.”*
She also criticized what she described as a misguided approach to addressing D’Acampo’s behavior, claiming that he had once been sent to media training to improve his professionalism.
“Years ago, there were some kind of rumblings about the presenter that everybody’s talking about at the moment. He went to some kind of etiquette media training because he’s Italian and the translation, he’s not quite getting it… It’s an insult to Italians. A stupid way of dealing with it. A very narrow-minded, dumb**s way of responding to bad behavior from a human being in the workspace.”
Industry Investigations and Responses
The allegations against D’Acampo are not new. Objective Media Group, which worked with the chef, previously conducted an internal investigation in 2022. However, in 2023, further issues arose, prompting additional scrutiny.
Studio Ramsay, another production company that collaborated with D’Acampo, released a statement emphasizing their stance on workplace misconduct:
“We take all allegations of inappropriate behavior and workplace misconduct very seriously and take action when warranted.”
Despite these reassurances, critics argue that more needs to be done to ensure that toxic behavior is properly addressed, rather than being brushed under the rug.
A Turning Point for the TV Industry?
Melanie Sykes’ comments come at a time when discussions about workplace culture in the entertainment industry are at an all-time high. As more individuals speak out about inappropriate behavior and power dynamics in television, there is growing pressure on networks and executives to enforce stricter policies and hold individuals accountable.
For Sykes, stepping away from television was a necessary decision to prioritize her well-being. However, she continues to use her platform to call for change, hoping that future generations of presenters and industry professionals will not have to endure the same challenges she faced.
As the allegations against Gino D’Acampo continue to unfold, it remains to be seen what consequences—if any—he will face. But one thing is clear: Melanie Sykes is determined to make sure the industry takes responsibility for the culture it has created.
