Mark Consuelos Recalls His Major On-Air Fail Quoting Today’s Al Roker While Doing a Guest Gig on GMA
Mark Consuelos recently shared a hilarious story about an on-air blunder that he believes cost him a future spot as a guest meteorologist on Good Morning America.
The Live with Kelly and Mark co-host opened up about the incident on the February 4 episode of the show, revealing how a simple slip of the tongue—
thanks to Today show’s Al Roker—led to an embarrassing moment he won’t forget.
Consuelos’ GMA Weather Mishap
During a chat with his wife and co-host, Kelly Ripa, Consuelos reflected on a time when GMA invited celebrities to step in as guest weather anchors.
Excited for the opportunity, he took on the challenge, but things quickly went downhill when he accidentally used Roker’s signature catchphrase.
“I remember for a period of time, Good Morning America was doing celebrity weathermen, and I did it one morning,” Consuelos, 53, recalled. “They said, ‘The only thing you don’t say is, Here’s what’s happening in your neck of the woods, because that’s Al Roker’s line on NBC, the Today show.’ That’s what he says.”
However, with that warning fresh in his mind, Consuelos found himself doing the exact thing he was told to avoid. When it was time to deliver the forecast, the phrase slipped out effortlessly.
“They put it in my head! Now it’s in my head, and that’s what I said!” he admitted. “And they never had me back!”
Ripa, unable to contain her laughter, jokingly scolded her husband, telling him he had “one job” to do. Consuelos, still amused by the incident, admitted that he had a feeling it wasn’t going to go well from the start.
A Funny Mix-Up with Al Roker
The conversation about Roker brought back another amusing memory for Ripa, involving a text message that led to momentary panic for Consuelos.
At an event years ago, Ripa and Consuelos had exchanged phone numbers with Roker and his wife, Deborah Roberts, hoping to plan a double date. However, in the early days of iPhones, contacts could sometimes get mixed up, leading to some unexpected surprises.
“Back in the early iPhone phases, entire text chains would pop up, or, if you left a voicemail, like, cell phones were wild,” Ripa explained. “So Mark’s cellphone number and my cellphone number would get confused, like in contacts.”
One day, Consuelos received a text from Roker that immediately raised his suspicions.
“[Roker texted] ‘Hey sweetie, when can we have dinner? Love, Al,’” Consuelos recalled dramatically.
Ripa, quick to set the record straight, interrupted: “First of all, it did not say, ‘Hey sweetie,’ that’s you putting your own twist on it!”
Still playing up the story, Consuelos responded, “Something like that.” But he admitted his initial reaction was sheer confusion, exclaiming to Ripa, “Who the blank is Al!?”
Ripa then had to explain that the message was simply from Al Roker, their “new best friend,” which left them both in stitches.
The Couples’ Date That Never Happened
Despite the mix-up, Ripa and Consuelos never actually ended up going on that dinner date with Roker and Roberts. The couple later poked fun at the missed opportunity while discussing “romantic retreats” during another segment of their show.
“Another thing we can fantasize about—a romantic retreat!” Ripa joked.
“Or not,” Consuelos playfully shot back.
Mark and Kelly’s Playful Banter Keeps Fans Entertained
The dynamic between Ripa and Consuelos is one of the reasons Live with Kelly and Mark remains a fan favorite. Their ability to poke fun at each other while sharing personal and often humorous stories keeps viewers engaged.
From accidental catchphrases to text message confusion, Consuelos’ latest retelling of his GMA and Al Roker experiences proved to be yet another example of how their real-life moments translate into entertaining TV.
While Consuelos may never be invited back to deliver the weather on Good Morning America, he certainly has no shortage of stories to tell. And as for that elusive dinner date with Al Roker? Well, perhaps there’s still a chance it could happen—just without any more unexpected text messages!
