Lorraine Kelly, the 65-year-old television presenter, found herself in an awkward situation on February 10, 2025,
when her comment during a live broadcast of Good Morning Britain left the studio gasping in disbelief.
The TV veteran had joined hosts Susanna Reid, 54, and Ed Balls, 57, to discuss the upcoming segment on wardrobe organization,
but her unintended remark about Ed left the crew—and viewers—stunned.
The moment occurred during a light-hearted conversation about how people can declutter their wardrobes and make better use of clothes they no longer wear.
Lorraine, who was set to be joined by Dilly Carter from Stacey Solomon’s Sort Your Life Out, was talking about the importance of tidying up and donating unused clothing when she made an offhand comment.
Susanna had asked if there was a more sustainable way to make use of barely-worn clothes, to which Lorraine responded: “And looking at your wardrobe, how many clothes do you actually wear?” She then added, “You know the way that I’ve got a fat wardrobe and a thin wardrobe.”
At this point, Susanna let out a chuckle, clearly confused by the term “fat wardrobe,” which Lorraine tried to explain further. “You know big things,” Lorraine said, wafting her arms in the air, clearly trying to clarify what she meant by her term. “Like the kaftan-type things,” she added, but Susanna still seemed unsure of what she was trying to say.
As the conversation continued, Lorraine attempted to elaborate, saying: “You know when you’re feeling a bit fat.” Realizing her words might have gone too far, Lorraine quickly tried to recover by looking at Ed. “Ed knows what I’m talking about,” she said with confidence. But that’s when gasps were heard across the studio as her remark unintentionally hit a nerve.
Ed, ever the professional, took it in stride and attempted to cover for Lorraine, stating, “I have a fat wardrobe and then I go on a diet and try to use my thin wardrobe, when it doesn’t work, I go back to my fat wardrobe.” His lighthearted response seemed to ease the tension, but Lorraine’s face turned a shade of red as she attempted to backpedal.
“Oh no, I don’t mean that, no,” Lorraine stammered, realizing her comment might have been misunderstood. “Just because you’re a fashion…” she trailed off, looking increasingly flustered.
Ed, showing understanding, reassured Lorraine, “Thank you, see, he looked me in the eye and I just knew that he knew what I was talking about, which is always a good thing because it doesn’t always happen.” Lorraine, grateful for Ed’s quick-witted response, joked, “I’m bailing you out now, I don’t have a fat wardrobe, I just said that to avoid embarrassment,” drawing laughs from the studio.
Despite the awkwardness, Lorraine tried to recover by continuing the conversation. “Boys do though, everybody does,” she said, in an attempt to steer the focus back to wardrobe organization. With a nervous smile, Lorraine added, “Anyway, we’ll talk about that with Dilly Carter, who is back to Sort Your Life Out.”
Feeling the heat of the moment, Lorraine wrapped up the segment with a self-aware comment: “I shall go away and think about what I’ve said.”
The slip-up certainly became one of the more memorable moments on Good Morning Britain, but Ed and Susanna’s quick responses ensured the conversation was able to continue without further discomfort. Fans of the show found the lighthearted exchange amusing, and Lorraine’s ability to laugh at herself only added to her likable persona on screen.
Lorraine’s red-faced moment serves as a reminder that live TV can sometimes lead to unintentional blunders, but it also highlights the camaraderie and good-natured humor among the Good Morning Britain hosts.
