Lorraine Kelly intensified tensions with GMB’s Ed Balls after calling him out on live television. What triggered their latest feud?

Lorraine Kelly found herself in a cringe-worthy situation on February 10, 2025,

when her attempt at a humorous remark during a live broadcast of Good Morning Britain unintentionally insulted her co-presenter, Ed Balls.

The 65-year-old TV icon had joined hosts Susanna Reid, 54, and Ed, 57, to offer a preview of her upcoming show,

but what was meant to be a casual conversation about tidying up wardrobes quickly turned awkward.

The discussion began innocuously enough, with the team chatting about ways to declutter closets and make use of clothes that are no longer worn.

Lorraine was joined by Dilly Carter, star of Stacey Solomon’s Sort Your Life Out, who was due to offer viewers expert advice on how to organize their wardrobes and use selling sites to get rid of unwanted items.

As the conversation progressed, Susanna raised the issue of how many people have clothes they never wear and asked if there was a more sustainable way to deal with the unused items. Lorraine, eager to join in, commented: “And looking at your wardrobe, how many clothes do you actually wear?”

She then elaborated on the topic with a rather puzzling description of her own wardrobe: “You know the way that I’ve got a fat wardrobe and a thin wardrobe.” The phrase caught Susanna off guard, and her reaction, coupled with her giggles, signaled that something wasn’t quite right. Lorraine continued, “You know how we don’t wear our clothes as much as we should, so how to declutter,” but it was clear that Susanna was still confused.

“What’s a fat wardrobe and a thin wardrobe?” Susanna asked, genuinely curious but also amused. Lorraine attempted to explain further: “A fat wardrobe is like the kaftan-type things,” gesturing expansively with her hands. “You know, big things.” However, Susanna still seemed unsure of what Lorraine was referring to, her expression one of mild bemusement.

At this point, Ed stepped in, saying “Right” in an effort to keep the conversation moving forward, but Lorraine was eager to make her point clear. She said, “You know when you’re feeling a bit fat.” Realizing her comment may have landed awkwardly, Lorraine quickly turned her attention to Ed, saying, “Ed knows what I’m talking about.”

But to the surprise of the studio audience, this remark seemed to hit a nerve, and gasps were heard in the background. Ed, ever the professional, tried to defuse the situation by laughing along, but Lorraine was already realizing her words might not have come out as intended. She immediately backtracked, saying, “Oh no, I don’t mean that, no,” before scrambling for an explanation, “Just because you’re a fashion…”

Ed, with his characteristic grace, jumped in to help Lorraine save face. “I have a fat wardrobe and then I go on a diet and I try and use my thin wardrobe, and when it doesn’t work, I go back to my fat wardrobe,” Ed joked, offering a humorous and relatable take on the situation.

Lorraine, clearly grateful for Ed’s quick thinking, smiled and responded: “Thank you, see he looked me in the eye and I just knew that he knew what I was talking about, which is always a good thing because it doesn’t always happen.” Susanna, who had been trying to hold in her laughter, finally let out a burst of giggles.

Ed, ever the good sport, then confessed, “I’m bailing you out now, I don’t have a fat wardrobe I just said that to avoid embarrassment.” His lighthearted comment helped ease the tension, but Lorraine still looked a little flustered, her face noticeably red.

Trying to move past the awkwardness, Lorraine attempted to shift the conversation, saying: “Boys do though, everybody does.” She quickly added, “Anyway, we’ll talk about that with Dilly Carter, who is back to Sort Your Life Out.” Lorraine wrapped up the segment with a self-reflective note: “I shall go away and think about what I’ve said.”

Though the incident was embarrassing for Lorraine, it showcased her quick-wit and the camaraderie between the Good Morning Britain hosts. Ed’s playful responses and Susanna’s laughter made for a lighthearted moment, turning what could have been an uncomfortable situation into a source of entertainment for viewers.
