Kerry Katona has been soaking up the sun in Thailand, taking a break from the cold February weather in the UK and avoiding the prospect of spending Valentine’s Day alone.
The 44-year-old former Atomic Kitten singer has been adjusting to life as a single woman following her split from longtime partner Ryan Mahoney late last year.
This holiday marks her first getaway without him, and she has admitted that the experience has been a challenging one.
While Kerry had company on her luxury vacation in the form of her daughter Heidi,
who is soon to celebrate her 18th birthday on February 20, the trip hasn’t been as smooth as she had hoped.
Speaking to OK! Magazine, Kerry confessed that she had mixed feelings about being away.
“While this holiday is fantastic, I’m really looking forward to going home,” she shared. “I love my home comforts and I miss the other kids. When I go away, I end up missing them so much – much more than they miss me! I’ve been FaceTiming DJ since I got here and have been in constant contact with all my kids.”
Navigating a Holiday with a Teenager
Although Kerry was excited to spend some quality time with Heidi, she admitted that traveling with a teenager comes with its own set of challenges. She explained that Heidi, who she shares with her ex-husband Mark Croft, has been embracing typical teenage independence and wasn’t always eager to spend time with her mum.
“As much as I love being away with Heidi, it is tough with teenagers and I’m missing having a partner to share this holiday with,” she revealed. “Heidi doesn’t want to do any activities with me – she would rather stay in the hotel – and she’s a typical teenager where everything I say is wrong, so that’s not easy.”
Kerry’s openness about her struggles highlights the reality of traveling as a single parent, especially when transitioning from a long-term relationship.
Emotional Struggles and Anxiety Battles
Despite the tropical surroundings, Kerry admitted that she has had emotional moments on this trip. She revealed that anxiety crept up on her, leading to an unexpected emotional breakdown.
“I found myself bursting into tears the other day because I became anxious and it built up,” she shared. “Being away for the first time without Ryan is difficult. I’m OK on my own, but I like having that bond with someone.”
Her candid confession sheds light on the emotional toll that comes with adjusting to a major life change, particularly after spending years in a committed relationship.
Exploring the Possibility of Dating Again
Before jetting off on her Thailand getaway, Kerry had been contemplating the idea of re-entering the dating scene. She revealed that she had attempted to join the exclusive dating app Raya, but ultimately decided to focus on self-care instead.
“I’m quite glad I’ll be away on holiday for it since it’s my first one single in a long time,” she said, referring to Valentine’s Day. “I’ll get the kids a card and maybe one for myself because I need a bit of self-love. I have actually been trying to get on the Raya app to dip my toe in the dating pond, but I’m not on it yet. I don’t think I’d like to do the other apps again.”
It appears that while Kerry is open to the idea of dating, she isn’t in a rush to jump back into a relationship.
A Newfound Commitment to Herself
On Valentine’s Day itself, Kerry took to Instagram to share a lighthearted update with her 852,000 followers. In a video filmed by the hotel pool, she jokingly declared that she was in an “extremely serious relationship”—with herself.
“Yes, I am in a relationship. It is extremely serious… how do I say this? It’s with myself. And I plan on staying single for a very, very, very, very, very, very long time,” she stated.
Her playful declaration resonated with many fans, reinforcing the message that self-love and personal growth are just as important as romantic relationships.
Looking Ahead
As Kerry wraps up her Thai getaway, it’s clear that this trip has been a time of reflection, self-discovery, and emotional healing. While she faced some difficult moments, she has also embraced the opportunity to focus on herself and her well-being.
With her signature honesty and humor, Kerry continues to share her journey with fans, reminding them that it’s okay to take time for themselves after a breakup. Whether she eventually re-enters the dating world or continues on her path of self-love, one thing is certain—Kerry Katona is determined to move forward on her own terms.
