Despite her “kind” actions, the Duchess of Sussex continues to face heavy criticism. Why is she receiving such negative attention?

A recent profile in *Vanity Fair* has painted a troubling picture of Meghan Markle’s behavior towards staff,

with some former employees accusing her of adopting a “Mean Girls” approach to her relationships in the workplace.

The piece reveals claims that the Duchess of Sussex, known for her charitable work

and outspoken advocacy, allegedly exhibited a dual nature with her staff, shifting from being “warm and effusive” at first to becoming “cold and withholding”

when things did not go according to plan.

Sources who worked with Meghan on media projects have described her as highly strategic, almost like playing “checkers” in her interactions, constantly aware of her “board” and where everyone stands.

When something went wrong—often linked to the couple’s own demanding schedules—Meghan allegedly targeted those she deemed responsible, sometimes leading to what one source referred to as “undermining behavior.” They added, “It’s talking behind your back. It’s gnawing at your sense of self. Really, like, Mean Girls teenager.”

This portrayal of Meghan has raised eyebrows, especially since the Duchess has worked hard to reframe her public image, often presenting herself as a caring, loving mother and wife. However, the accusations in *Vanity Fair* suggest a different side of Meghan’s personality, one that some staff members reportedly found difficult to deal with, to the point where it left them seeking therapy.

Despite these allegations, some individuals who worked closely with the Sussexes have defended the couple, painting a more positive picture. Jane Marie, a producer who collaborated with Meghan and Harry on their Archewell audio projects, insisted that Meghan is “just a lovely, genuine person,” offering a stark contrast to the negative depictions in the article.

The *Vanity Fair* profile also echoes earlier accusations of mistreatment that have surfaced during Meghan’s time at Kensington Palace. These allegations, which have been repeatedly denied by representatives of the Duchess and Prince Harry, include claims of bullying, which critics argue damaged the couple’s reputations. Some employees described working conditions that they found challenging, leading to the idea that the couple’s behavior might have contributed to a tense environment for their staff.

Nevertheless, several loyal supporters of Meghan and Harry have spoken out in their defense. Staff who worked closely with the couple have praised them as “caring” and “dedicated,” highlighting personal gestures such as giving away baby clothes, sending fresh flowers, and offering “care packages.” Josh Kettler, who briefly served as Harry’s chief of staff, described his experience as being “warmly welcomed” by the couple, while Ben Browning, Archewell’s former head of content, called his time with the company “positive and supportive.”

While the couple has received their share of positive feedback, they have also been subjected to criticism in the media. A previous *Hollywood Reporter* article referred to Meghan as a “dictator in high heels,” a harsh description that fits into the broader narrative of *Vanity Fair’s* profile.

The timing of these new revelations could prove damaging for Meghan as she attempts to reshape her public persona. As Tom Bower, a royal author and investigative journalist, noted, the timing of these allegations could undercut the warm and loving image Meghan has cultivated, especially with the upcoming release of her Netflix series, *With Love, Meghan*. The series, which is set to air in March, risks further complicating her public image, particularly when public reception to her past projects has been mixed.

Meanwhile, Meghan and Harry’s attempts to portray a caring, philanthropic image are still ongoing. The couple has been involved in efforts to support victims of the recent wildfires in California, offering donations and serving meals to survivors. However, some critics have accused the couple of using the situation for publicity, with one critic calling their actions “disaster tourists” in light of their lavish lifestyle.

These accusations, coupled with the latest *Vanity Fair* profile, may have significant consequences for Meghan and Harry’s reputation, especially in the United States. As Richard Fitzwilliams, a royal commentator, pointed out, the couple’s attempts to build a successful showbiz career are under scrutiny. Their portrayal as “lost, out of their depth, and naïve” may signal trouble for their future projects and their public image.

Despite the negative press, Meghan’s future plans remain ambitious, including the launch of her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, which she teased by sending out products like jars of jam to celebrities such as Kris Jenner and Chrissy Teigen. Whether these efforts will resonate with the public, especially in the face of growing scrutiny, remains to be seen.
