Craig Melvin was momentarily caught off guard during The Today Show on Friday
when co-anchor Savannah Guthrie casually mentioned her Valentine’s and Galentine’s Day plans.
The lighthearted exchange left Craig questioning Savannah’s marriage status, leading to an amusing moment between the two longtime co-hosts.
A Playful Mix-Up on Today
As the second hour of The Today Show kicked off, Craig wished viewers a happy Valentine’s Day
and then acknowledged the previous day’s festivities, saying, “Happy Valentine’s Day to all who celebrate, and Galentine’s Day apparently.”
Savannah quickly jumped in, clarifying that she had already celebrated Galentine’s Day the night before with her girlfriends. “Yes, that was yesterday. I went out for Galentine’s Day,” she responded enthusiastically.
Craig, momentarily confused, laughed awkwardly and responded, “You’ve been married for years?” His puzzled reaction suggested that he had misunderstood the concept of Galentine’s Day, which celebrates female friendships rather than romantic relationships.
With a smile, Savannah explained, “It’s Galentine’s Day—you go with your girlfriends. You hang out with your girlfriends and drink wine.”
Realizing his mistake, Craig quickly caught on, joking, “Oh, it’s an addition to Valentine’s Day. Happy day after Galentine’s Day!”
Savannah Guthrie’s Marriage to Michael Feldman
While Craig’s moment of confusion was all in good fun, Savannah has been happily married for years. She met her husband, Michael Feldman, in 2008 at his 40th birthday party. Their relationship began with a rather practical but endearing moment—Michael fixed her toilet.
Recalling their early days in an interview with Reveal, Savannah shared, “When we first started dating, he came over and fixed my toilet, which I found to be very attractive.” She went on to describe how his practical skills and intelligence won her over. “Mike is extremely handy, which is one of the things I liked about him when I first met him. I thought, ‘Wow, here’s a sophisticated guy who grew up in the city but who can actually do things.’”
Michael, a business consultant, is a founding partner and North American co-chairman of FGS Global, a strategic communications and consulting firm.
A Love Story That Led to Marriage and Parenthood
Savannah and Michael’s relationship grew stronger over the years, leading to their engagement in 2013. The following year, they tied the knot in a picturesque ceremony in Arizona, near Savannah’s hometown.
Now, the couple are proud parents to two children, daughter Vale and son Charles, often sharing glimpses of their happy family life.
Savannah’s Journey to Motherhood
Becoming a mother was not without challenges for Savannah. She has been open about her experience with in vitro fertilization (IVF) and the emotional journey that came with it.
In an interview with Health magazine, she shared, “It was important to me for [Vale] to have a sibling, somebody to do life with. My husband and I, we decided, ‘OK, let’s give it a shot.’ But it ended up taking more than one attempt. It took a few.”
She described the process as difficult but ultimately rewarding, saying, “We were lucky. I always say, Charley was like the last egg out. He really was. And we’re so blessed.”
Balancing Work, Family, and Friendship
Savannah’s ability to balance her demanding career, marriage, motherhood, and friendships is something that many admire. Her participation in Galentine’s Day—an unofficial holiday made popular by Parks and Recreation, celebrating female friendships—showcases her appreciation for her close circle of friends.
Even though Craig was momentarily perplexed by Savannah’s celebration, the moment highlighted the fun and friendly dynamic the Today hosts share. Their lighthearted exchange only added to the morning show’s charm, proving once again why fans love tuning in for their daily dose of news, humor, and relatable moments.
