Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden has opened up about her ongoing health journey,
revealing that while she dreams of becoming a mother, it is currently “too dangerous” for her to fall pregnant.
The 33-year-old dancer, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, has undergone a mastectomy and chemotherapy.
While she has since received the reassuring news that there is “no evidence of disease,”
Amy recently shared on Loose Women that her cancer treatment has put her into early menopause, making pregnancy unsafe at this time.
Cancer Treatment and Fertility Challenges
Speaking candidly about her fertility, Amy explained that her cancer was hormone-fed, meaning that any hormonal changes in her body—such as those caused by pregnancy—could be risky.
“I had a hormone-fed cancer, so I have been put into early menopause and it would be too dangerous now to consider it,” she said.
However, Amy remains hopeful that she and her husband, Ben Jones, will be able to have children in the future. Before undergoing chemotherapy, she underwent an egg retrieval procedure, which resulted in five frozen embryos.
“I really want to be a mum, I’ve always wanted to be a mum. We do have five embryos, and I hope one day, if it’s safe to do so, I do get the privilege and honour to be someone’s mummy,” she shared.
Looking Toward the Future
Amy previously spoke about her fertility journey on the What If? podcast, where she reiterated her hope of one day starting a family when it is deemed safe.
“When they feel it’s safe, we will hopefully have the opportunity,” she said.
She also acknowledged that if pregnancy isn’t possible for her in the future, she and Ben are open to exploring other ways of becoming parents.
“And if not, there’s still lots of other opportunities, which we have spoken about,” Amy added. “Hopefully, in years to come, we’ll be lucky enough to become parents too. But for now, we’re just taking every day as it comes.”
A Glimmer of Hope
Amy first shared her concerns about fertility in her BBC documentary, Strictly Amy: Cancer and Me, where she documented her cancer battle and the emotional toll it took on her.
During the program, she recalled the overwhelming sense of relief when doctors successfully retrieved and froze five embryos before she began chemotherapy.
“I needed to have a shot at something, no matter what, at that time,” she revealed. “I just needed that little bit of hope.”
Amy’s Resilience and Determination
Despite the challenges she has faced, Amy has remained positive and determined. Throughout her cancer battle, she has been open about the physical and emotional struggles of treatment, inspiring fans with her strength.
Following her chemotherapy, she confirmed that there is currently no evidence of disease, a moment she described as “incredible” and “overwhelming.” However, she acknowledges that the road to recovery isn’t just about being cancer-free—it also includes dealing with the long-term effects of treatment, including early menopause and the uncertainty surrounding her ability to carry a child.
Support from Fans and Fellow Celebrities
Amy has received an outpouring of support from Strictly Come Dancing fans and her fellow dancers. Her Strictly colleagues, including Dianne Buswell, Janette Manrara, and Oti Mabuse, have continuously praised her resilience and bravery.
Fans have also taken to social media to express their admiration, with many sharing messages of encouragement.
“Amy, you are an inspiration! Wishing you all the best for your future,” one fan wrote.
Another added, “Your strength and positivity are incredible. Wishing you all the happiness in the world!”
Hope for the Future
While Amy’s journey has been filled with obstacles, she remains hopeful that motherhood will be in her future when the time is right.
For now, she continues to focus on her health, recovery, and advocacy for breast cancer awareness. Whether through pregnancy or alternative options, Amy Dowden’s dream of becoming a mother is something she refuses to give up on—and with her unwavering determination, it’s clear that her journey is far from over.
