Amy Dowden, the beloved Strictly Come Dancing professional, has opened up about her journey toward starting a family
as she nears the two-year anniversary of her breast cancer diagnosis.
The 34-year-old dancer, who stepped away from Strictly in 2023 to focus on her health,
recently shared an emotional update on Loose Women, discussing her hopes for motherhood despite the challenges she has faced.
Amy’s Journey Through Cancer Treatment
Dowden was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, forcing her to take a break from Strictly Come Dancing to undergo treatment.
After enduring chemotherapy, she was thrilled to announce in February last year that her latest health check had shown “no evidence of disease.” While this was a major milestone, her recovery journey has presented new challenges, including being placed into a medically induced menopause as part of her treatment.
During her appearance on Loose Women, Amy spoke candidly about the impact of her diagnosis on her plans to have children with her husband, fellow dancer Ben Jones. Before undergoing chemotherapy, she took steps to freeze her eggs, hoping to preserve the possibility of starting a family in the future.
Amy’s Emotional Response to Motherhood Plans
Speaking with Loose Women panelist Ayda Field, Amy was asked about her thoughts on motherhood now that she is regaining her strength.
“Where are you at in that journey? Because now you’ve just finally got your strength back in your body, but where does that sit in your mind space and in your heart space?” Field asked.
Amy responded with heartfelt honesty, saying:
“At the moment, it would be too soon. I had a hormone-fed cancer, so I have been put into early menopause, and it would be too dangerous now to consider it.”
Despite the current obstacles, Amy remains hopeful. She revealed that she and Ben have five frozen embryos, expressing her deep desire to one day become a mother.
“But I really want to be a mum. I’ve always wanted to be a mum. We do have five embryos, and I hope one day, if it’s safe to do so, I do get the privilege and honor to be someone’s mum,” she shared.
Her touching words were met with applause from the studio audience, with host Ruth Langsford praising her as an inspiration.
Amy’s Return to Strictly and Life on Tour
After a year away from the ballroom, Amy was eager to return to Strictly Come Dancing in 2024. She was originally partnered with JLS star JB Gill, but her comeback was cut short due to a foot injury just weeks into the competition. Lauren Oakley stepped in to replace her, but Amy has since been able to rejoin the Strictly live tour.
On tour, she has taken on a unique role in the show’s first-ever “throuple” pairing. Alongside JB and Lauren, Amy has been embracing the unusual dynamic with a sense of humor. Earlier this month, she shared a playful Instagram post with a video of the trio, captioning it:
“POV: You’re in the first-ever tour throuple and your partners are trying to convince you to dance with them on tour.”
The post was met with enthusiasm from fans, who were delighted to see Amy back in action and in good spirits.
Marking World Cancer Day with a Powerful Message
Beyond her dance career, Amy has used her platform to raise awareness about cancer and support those affected by the disease. Earlier this month, she took to social media to acknowledge World Cancer Day, sharing a moving tribute to those impacted by cancer.
Her post read:
“WORLD CANCER DAY. Supporting those living with cancer, those supporting their loved ones affected by cancer, admiring the survivors, honoring those we have lost, and never, ever GIVING UP.”
Amy’s resilience, positivity, and determination to help others have made her a role model for many. As she continues to recover and look toward the future, she remains hopeful that she will one day achieve her dream of becoming a mother. For now, she is embracing every moment, whether on the dance floor or advocating for cancer awareness.
