Ben Shephard, known for his composed demeanor on This Morning,
has revealed a common parenting frustration that many can relate to—dealing with a teenager’s untidy bedroom.
During a candid discussion on Thursday’s episode of the ITV show,
the presenter admitted that he sometimes “loses it” over the state of his son Jack’s room, despite repeated requests for tidiness.
A Battle Over Cleanliness at Home
Ben, who shares a stunning Richmond, London home with his wife Annie and youngest son Jack, opened up about his ongoing struggle with maintaining order in the household.
With his eldest son Sam now away at university, Jack is the only one left at home, and it seems his teenage habits are putting Ben’s patience to the test.
Speaking on This Morning, the 50-year-old presenter explained how he tries to encourage Jack to clean up after himself. “For my own mental health, I will go in regularly,” Ben joked, acknowledging that the sight of the mess gets to him.
However, his polite attempts to nudge Jack into action are often ignored. “I’m always very nice and polite about it… and it never happens,” he admitted. Eventually, his patience wears thin. “Eventually, I’ll lose it, and I’ll say, ‘For heaven’s sake, do you not realise what you’re doing to me? Can you put your things away?’”
Despite his efforts, the victory is often short-lived. Ben confessed that within days, the room is back to its original messy state. “Cut to the middle of next week, and it’ll be exactly the same,” he laughed.
A Contrast to Ben’s Picture-Perfect Home
While Ben might struggle to keep his son’s bedroom tidy, the rest of his family home looks immaculate. The TV star has occasionally shared glimpses of his £4 million Richmond property on social media, and fans have admired its stylish interiors and impressive outdoor space.
The open-plan living area boasts a large wooden dining table, while floor-to-ceiling patio doors open up to a stunning garden. One of Ben’s favorite home features is an outdoor gin bench, which he built himself. It’s a beloved addition to their outdoor space, especially during the summer months.
Despite the serene and stylish look of their home, Ben’s latest confession proves that even in a picture-perfect setting, everyday parenting struggles still exist.
Adjusting to an Emptying Nest
Beyond the challenges of maintaining a tidy home, Ben and Annie have also been adjusting to life with one less child under their roof. Their eldest son, Sam, left for university in September last year, marking a major milestone for the Shephard family.
At the time, Ben opened up about how emotional the transition was. Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, he shared: “He actually starts lectures today. So he’s had his freshers. It was all very emotional.”
Reflecting on a touching moment between Sam and his mother Annie as they said their goodbyes, Ben admitted that he struggled with the change. “She was better than I was, to be fair. I was really, really emotional about it,” he confessed.
A Proud Family Man
Despite the challenges of parenthood, Ben remains incredibly proud of his family. Recently, he delighted fans by sharing a rare photo of himself alongside both of his sons. The picture showcased how much Sam and Jack have grown, with both boys now towering over their father.
Alongside them, Ben’s wife Annie beamed with pride, proving that despite the occasional household struggle, the Shephard family remains as close as ever.
Parenting: The Universal Challenge
Ben’s lighthearted yet relatable confession on This Morning struck a chord with many parents who have faced the same battle with teenage messiness. While his home may look pristine in pictures, it seems no household is immune to the classic struggle of keeping a teenager’s room in order.
As Ben continues to juggle work, family life, and the challenges of raising two growing boys, his candid admission serves as a reminder that even TV stars deal with everyday parenting frustrations. And no matter how many times you ask, a teenager’s messy room will always be a battle that needs fighting again the following week.
