Seth Rogen finally broke his silence on James Franco, leaving fans shocked: “How could I stay friends with someone who harasses women?”

Seth Rogen has opened up about his regret over a joke he made about James Franco during a 2014 Saturday Night Live monologue,

a remark that has gained renewed attention in light of their professional split.

The actor and filmmaker, who worked closely with Franco for nearly two decades, acknowledged that he now views the joke as inappropriate,

especially given the accusations of misconduct that later surfaced against his former collaborator.

Rogen and Franco’s Long-Standing Partnership

Rogen and Franco’s working relationship dates back to 1999, when they both starred in the cult-classic television series Freaks and Geeks

Over the years, they developed a strong on-screen dynamic, co-starring in several successful projects, including Pineapple Express, This Is the End, and The Disaster Artist. However, their professional collaboration came to an abrupt end following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against Franco in 2018.

The accusations, brought forth by five women who were former students at Franco’s acting school, led to widespread controversy. As the allegations surfaced, Rogen distanced himself from his longtime friend, making it clear that he did not condone any form of misconduct.

The 2014 SNL Joke That Rogen Now Regrets

In a 2021 interview, Rogen reflected on a joke he had made during his 2014 SNL monologue, which referenced an incident involving Franco messaging a 17-year-old girl on Instagram. At the time, Franco, who was 36, was accused of attempting to meet up with the teenage girl after asking about her relationship status and whether she wanted to see him in person. Screenshots of the exchange were leaked online, sparking a wave of criticism.

During the SNL monologue, Rogen jokingly described a prank he had supposedly played on Franco, saying:

“To make myself feel better, I decided to prank James Franco. I posed as a girl on Instagram, told him I was way young. He seemed unfazed. I have a date to meet him at the Ace Hotel.”

While the joke was met with laughter at the time, Rogen later expressed deep regret over making light of the situation. He admitted, “I do look back at a joke I made on Saturday Night Live in 2014 and I very much regret making that joke. It was a terrible joke, honestly.”

Franco’s Response and the Fallout

When the controversy first emerged, Franco defended himself by stating that he had exercised “bad judgment” but did not realize the age of the person he was speaking with. He acknowledged that social media interactions can be misleading, saying, “It’s the way that people meet each other today, but what I’ve learned – I guess because I’m new to it – is you don’t know who’s on the other end. You don’t know who you’re talking to. I used bad judgment, and I learned my lesson.”

However, this was just one of several allegations that would later be made against Franco. In 2018, multiple women, including former students at his acting school, came forward with claims of sexual misconduct. Two of these women filed a lawsuit against the actor, alleging exploitative behavior and abuse of power.

Although Franco denied the allegations, he eventually admitted to having sexual relationships with students at his acting school. A financial settlement was later reached, leading to the lawsuit being dropped.

Rogen’s Decision to Cut Ties with Franco

In the wake of these allegations, Rogen made it clear that he would no longer work with Franco. Addressing the situation in an interview, he stated, “What I can say is that I despise abuse and harassment, and I would never cover or conceal the actions of someone doing it or knowingly put someone in a situation where they were around someone like that.”

His decision to end his working relationship with Franco marked a significant shift in their once-close friendship. Franco later expressed disappointment over their estrangement, telling Variety, “I haven’t talked to Seth. I love Seth, we had 20 great years together, but I guess it’s over. And not for lack of trying. I’ve told him how much he’s meant to me.”

When asked about Franco’s comments in a recent interview with Esquire, Rogen appeared uninterested in revisiting the topic, responding, “Honestly, I absorb so little media that it really wasn’t on my radar.”

The interviewer noted that Rogen seemed slightly irritated by the question and quickly moved on to other topics.

Final Thoughts

Seth Rogen’s decision to publicly express regret over his 2014 SNL joke highlights how perspectives on certain issues have evolved over time. While the joke was initially received with laughter, Rogen has since acknowledged that making light of serious allegations was inappropriate.

His professional and personal separation from Franco signals his commitment to standing against misconduct in the entertainment industry. As both actors continue their respective careers, their once-iconic partnership now remains a thing of the past.
