Two Sister Wives stars were instructed to “return to school” by the court during a custody battle, but their “uncooperative” behavior stole the spotlight.

The ongoing custody battle for Truely Brown, the daughter of Sister Wives stars Christine Brown and Kody Brown, has taken an unexpected and surprising legal turn.

Despite not being legally married, the couple’s spiritual union has led the court to treat their situation like a divorce case.

In an effort to resolve issues surrounding their 14-year-old daughter’s future, the court has mandated that both Christine

and Kody attend compulsory parenting and divorce classes, in addition to undergoing mediation.

Understanding the Spiritual Marriage and Its Legal Implications

Christine and Kody’s relationship has been one of the central storylines on Sister Wives, showcasing the challenges of a plural marriage.

The couple entered a spiritual marriage in March 1994, while Kody was still married to Meri Brown. Over the years, the dynamics between Kody and his wives became increasingly strained. In 2021, Christine made the decision to leave Kody, citing emotional distance and his admission that he no longer found her attractive. Christine’s departure set the stage for her eventual marriage to David Woolley in October 2023.

Although Kody and Christine never had a legal marriage, their long-term commitment to one another, as well as their six children together, has created a complicated situation in the eyes of the court. The lengthy nature of their relationship, coupled with the fact that they lived together as a married couple for nearly 30 years, has led the legal system to treat their separation as a divorce case.

Court-Mandated Parenting and Divorce Classes

As part of their ongoing custody dispute over Truely, the court has directed Kody and Christine to attend both parenting and divorce classes. This decision, although unexpected, underscores the importance of co-parenting for the well-being of their minor child. Since Truely is only 14 years old, the court is prioritizing her need for a stable and nurturing environment, which may be difficult to achieve if Kody and Christine continue to harbor unresolved conflicts.

The classes aim to help both parents improve their co-parenting relationship and equip them with the tools to effectively communicate and work together for Truely’s best interests. In addition to the classes, the court may also appoint a guardian ad litem, an individual who will advocate for Truely’s well-being during the legal proceedings.

Why Parenting and Divorce Classes Matter

It is somewhat surprising that the court has ordered Kody and Christine to attend divorce classes, especially considering that their marriage was never legally formalized. However, it is clear that the court sees their long-term relationship as significant enough to require intervention. The classes are designed to help Kody and Christine navigate their complicated dynamic in a way that benefits Truely.

Kody and Christine’s ongoing disagreements and the tension between them have been evident on Sister Wives, and the court’s intervention is likely aimed at reducing the friction between them. Given that many of Kody and Christine’s children are now adults, the focus is on their youngest child, Truely, who still needs the emotional support of both parents.

By attending the mandatory parenting classes, Christine and Kody are given the opportunity to learn how to approach their co-parenting responsibilities without letting personal differences get in the way. It is hoped that this will allow Truely to grow up in a healthier and more harmonious environment, free from the emotional turmoil that has plagued her parents’ relationship.

Challenges for Kody and Christine

Despite the positive intentions behind the court’s orders, it’s clear that Kody and Christine may feel awkward or resistant to attending these classes together. Their past is filled with emotional wounds and betrayals, and having to revisit those issues in a structured setting might feel uncomfortable. However, the court’s ruling shows that it is crucial for the sake of their daughter’s well-being that they learn to set aside personal grievances and find ways to cooperate.

In the long run, the parenting and divorce classes could help Kody and Christine develop a more respectful relationship, even if they never fully reconcile. The classes could also offer a way for them to build a foundation of tolerance and communication that will make co-parenting easier, not just for Truely but for their other children as well.

A Positive Step for Truely’s Future

Ultimately, the court’s decision to order parenting and divorce classes for Kody and Christine is a positive step toward ensuring that Truely is given the emotional stability she deserves. While the situation remains complex, both parents have the chance to learn how to better navigate their co-parenting responsibilities in a way that supports their daughter’s well-being. If Kody and Christine can set aside their differences, they will be able to provide Truely with the foundation she needs to thrive as she navigates her teenage years.
